It was national BRA Day yesterday and Health Sciences North held an information and awareness session for those thinking about post-mastectomy breast reconstruction surgery.

In it’s fifth year, Breast Reconstruction Awareness day aims at lowering the number of women who decided against breast reconstruction surgery after battling breast cancer, because they felt they were not informed of there options.

Plastic Surgeon at Health Science North Dr. Amanda Fortin says there are plenty of different kinds of surgery for women to discover.

Fortin says it’s a woman’s choice, but many people do not know that reconstructive surgery is a fully covered medical procedure.

Fortin says breast cancer can affect a woman’s self-esteem and social life but the percentages of women who choose reconstruction surgery are low, at 9 percent of Canadian women.
