A Vancouver dad is being ordered by the BC government to stop letting his kids ride public transit alone.

Adrian Crook is a single father of five who says British Columbia Children’s Ministry received an anonymous complaint and after conducting an investigation, they have since determined his children are not old enough to ride the city bus without him.

He says he spent two years training his four oldest kids, who are between the ages of 7 and 11, how to make the 45-minute commute to school together as siblings, without him.

In an interview, Cook’s daughter said she and her siblings “had a lot of experience” riding the bus, and Dad added that, “Crime is less than when they grew up, so we should be trusting that they live in a a safe world. But we don’t base our decisions on data often, we base it on visceral fear.”

“Your job as a parent is to raise your kids to not need you eventually,” says Crook. “If they’re comfortable taking on certain risks, it’s sort of incumbent upon you to gauge whether they’re ready.”

The father of five has now been told children under 10 are not allowed to ride the bus unsupervised and that children under 12 can’t be responsible for the younger children when there is no adult present.
