Texting in an emergency is now an option in Sudbury, but only for residents who have difficulty communicating.

Greater Sudbury Police say anyone who is deaf, hard-of hearing or has a speech impairment can register their cell phone, so in an emergency they can simply press T-9-1-1 to connect with an operator.

Special software has been installed so that 9-1-1 operators can text with the caller.

Mobile devices must be registered so police can recognize the number as coming from someone with communication difficulties.
