Snowmobile

By Angela Gemmill

Effective immediately the snowmobile season is over across Greater Sudbury.

The Sudbury Trail Plan is no longer conducting grooming operations and has begun to remove signs and stakes.

President of the Sudbury Trail Plan, Chuck Breathat says there’s not enough snow cover, so rocks and stumps become hazards on the trails.

He also warns about ice safety as local waterways begin to melt from underneath, so checking ice from the top isn’t always helpful.

Breathat says if snowmobilers take their machines out right now they could get hurt, damage their snowmobiles or worse get killed.

Many volunteers help make the snowmobiling season a success every year.

Breathat says they’ll work throughout the year to get things ready for next winter, this includes planning, fundraising and keeping the trails groomed.

On the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) website (www.ofsc.on.ca) all local trails are listed as ‘unavailable’.
