In honour of Jamie’s third favourite holiday (next to Christmas and National Cheese Day), today is National Drink Wine Day!

Here are some fun facts about wine:

-Red wine is considered to be the most “romantic” alcoholic beverage to share.

-Some people have a fear of wine. This is called “oenophobia”.

-In early Roman times, if a husband caught his wife drinking wine, he was at liberty to kill her, as it was forbidden for women to drink wine.

-There is a “right” and “wrong” way to hold a wine glass. It should be held by the stem so that your hand doesn’t raise the temperature of the wine. (That’s why wine glasses are designed the way they are.)

-Not sure what to do at a wine tasting? Take a sip and hold it in your mouth for a few seconds. (It’s acceptable to either swallow it or spit it out afterwards.) A good wine will have a lengthy aftertaste.

-The oldest wine cellar in the world is actually in the wreck of the Titanic! Despite the wreckage and the depth, many of the bottles are still intact.

-There is a 24-hour, free wine fountain in Italy’s Abruzzo region. Anyone can drink from the push-button fountain, although it’s primary purpose was to quench the thirst of those taking the Cammino di San Tommaso pilgrimage.

However you say it, drink responsibly….Cheers/Salud/Prost/Sante/Salute!
