Laurentian University has established a new mining and technology research initiative called LMIT which will synchronize and optimize mining research and technology done at the University.

Laurentian Mining Innovation and Technology will bring together four award winning research centres at the school as a on-stop approach to solidify LU as the leaders in mining research in Canada.

LMIT is not a new organization but an over-arching structure.

On hand for the announcement was Ontario Minister of Research and Innovation, Reza Moridi.

He says Laurentian is perfect because it’s the only school with mines sites minutes away.

Sudbury is home to the largest integrated mining complex in the world with over five thousand kilometres of mining tunnels under the Sudbury area.

Associate VP of LMIT, Vic Pakalnis says it’s an important announcement even though commodity prices are down.

Laurentian University already ranks first in Canada in three funding categories from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council.

Laurentian University has secured over 100 million dollars in research income in the past five years.
