Close to 7,500 hundred people in Sudbury are searching for a health care provider and a new City of Lakes Family Health Team clinic in Chelmsford will look to cut into that number.

The province announced today that close to one million dollars will help the City of Lakes team open the new clinic as well as fund the four physicians that will set up practice there.

$447,911 will go to leasehold improvements.

$408,894 will be for an increased annual base funding for the Family Health Team.

And a one time fund of $72,330 will be to help open the latest location.

Dr. Kristie Herranen, who is from Espanola is one of three family physicians already committed to joining the clinic and she says her work has already begun.

Sudbury MPP Glenn Thibeault says this announcement goes beyond just the funding, helping the cities aging population.

City of Lakes Executive Director, David Courtemanche says up to five thousand patients will be able to get care they didn’t have before.

The Family Health Team already has three sites operating in Sudbury, Val Caron and Walden providing care to over 18 thousand patients and the Chelmsford site could be ready in a matter of months.
