The doors are officially open to the renovated Northeast Forest Fire Management Centre.

The centre at the Sudbury Airport covers a region of over 540 thousand square kilometres that has dealt with almost 90 fires since August 1st.

Fire Information Officer Shayne McCool says the biggest difference is the space which allows them to house crews for any size of fire.

The new facility is was also built with the environment in mind with numerous green components.

The renovations at the Sudbury Airport included the Sudbury Fire Management headquarters which houses 72 firefighters that respond over the Northeast.

This included the purchase of an existing airplane hangar.

Nickel Belt MPP France Gelinas says the previous facility was quite pitiful and now the staff can feel safer doing what is quite the dangerous job.

The upgrades to the Northeast Forest Fire Management Centre and Sudbury Fire Management headquarters cost the provincial government 20.1 million dollars.
