Seven local ATV riders were hauled out by a rugged, amphibious all terrain vehicle called a Sherp early Sunday morning.

Greater Sudbury police tweeted around 6:15am they were working with rescuers and the distributor of the machine, Lopes Limited to rescue the group that was stranded North-West of Barnett Lake which is North of Capreol.

The group of seven had encountered heavy mud, deep snow in areas, running streams, open bodies of water and thin ice making it impossible to get back to safe ground and it also didn’t allow an Ornge Air Ambulance to land.

Less than two hours later, police followed up their tweet with another that said the Sherp was able to cross through the swamp to access the victims and bring them to safety.
