Why Is The Snow Orange in Eastern Europe?

Orange snow falling in Eastern Europe makes it look like people are snowboarding on Mars or on a sand dune in outer-space.

The snow falling in the region’s mountainous areas is orange – a strange phenomenon which happens every five years or so.

Right now, it is apparently extra bad this year and  “people have complained of sand in their mouths”.

So why is the snow orange?

According to BBC, “meteorologists say the phenomenon is caused by sand from Sahara desert storms mixing with snow and rain.”

The Independent explains how dust and sand from a sandstorm in the Sahara has been carried across the Mediterranean Sea high into the atmosphere, blending with white snow as it tumbles to the ground.
