Members of the community came together once again today for the International Day of Mourning, a chance to remember those who have died and those are are injured or suffering illness due to workplace conditions.

The Day of Mourning was started here in Sudbury 33 years ago and is now recognized in over 100 communities across the world.

President of the Sudbury District Labour Council, Jamie West says a moment of silence is held but when it comes to in the workplace people can’t be afraid to speak up.

West says when he first started coming to this event 15 years ago the average number of workplace deaths are recorded in Canada every year was at around one thousand, and it’s still the same today.

In 2015, there were over 232 thousand claims accepted for lost time due to work-related injury or disease.
