Over the past 12 years, Sudbury Rocks, Race, Run or Walk for Diabetes has attracted over 15 thousand participants raising around 500 thousand dollars for diabetes education and management.

The event is run entirely by volunteers, so all proceeds go to help reduce rates of diabetes in Northern Ontario where in some areas the numbers are 7 to 17 per cent.

Darryl Hanson was diagnosed with diabetes in 2001 at the age of 34, but through care, diet and exercise, he’s come a long way.

Hanson is now no longer medically diabetic.

Amylee Laforest with Diabetes Canada says the money raised has allowed for success stories like Hanson’s, and allows children to attend summer camps with other diabetic children.

On May 14 everything from a 1 km children’s event, up to a Boston Marathon qualifying full marathon will take place.
