Trump-Trudeau Meeting Seems To Go Well

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and U-S President Donald Trump have released a joint statement following their meeting at the White House.

It appears to tick all the boxes that Ottawa was looking for — with pledges of co-operation on the economy, energy security and the environment, border security and defence.

The statement notes that Canada is the most important foreign market for 35 U-S States, and that more than two-billion-dollars in two-way trade flows across the border every day.

The lengthy statement indicates the two sides have agreed to work on improving labour mobility and trade across the Canada-U.S. border, expand preclearance agreements to cover cargo shipments and work on infrastructure projects in both countries.

It reflects a grasp of a “unique” partnership and a commitment to continue to strengthen ties for the mutual benefit of the two countries.

The statement also acknowledges a shared goal of “moving forward on energy infrastructure projects that will create jobs while respecting the environment.”

It also says the two sides plan to build on a number of areas of environmental co-operation, particularly along the border and the Great Lakes.

Earlier, Trump’s daughter Ivanka sat at Trudeau’s side during a meeting to discuss the advancement of women entrepreneurs and business leaders.
