The DJ Hancock Memorial Park is officially open to the public.

The original project was a splash pad designed to look like a hockey rink to honour DJ’s love for hockey, but it has grown into a full park with the splash pad, play structure, swings and statue and plaque honouring DJ Hancock.

DJ’s mother, Kim Hancock says this is about the community being able to enjoy something beautiful in DJ’s honour.

Dean Hancock says it’s a new beginning for them and they will enjoy coming to the park with a cup of coffee.

Splashpad of Champions Committee Chair and family friend, Melissa Sheridan says the park is a dream come true.

The park cost 500 thousand dollars to complete, of that 172 thousand was raised by the Splashpad of Champions Committee, the rest was donated by the community.

Dean Maxwell Hancock was killed in 2014 at the age of 18 when his car was hit by a drunk driver.

The park is located on Walford Road beside Lockerby Composite School.
