Now that the warmer weather is here so is mosquito season.

The Sudbury and District Health Unit is reminding residents to protect themselves to avoid West Nile Virus.

Environmental Support Officer, Ashley Derocchis there are some simple precautions you can take such as using insect repellent, staying in screened in areas and wearing light-coloured clothing like long-sleeve shirts and pants.

It’s also important to eliminate standing water from your property.

Derocchis says there have been two confirmed human cases of West Nile Virus in the area….one last year with the first back in 2006.

West Nile virus normally causes only mild illness in humans, but severe complications are possible, particularly in people over 50 years of age, and among those who have weakened immune systems.
