Sudbury City Council has endorsed a new initiative that encourages more women to run for public office in the 2018 municipal election.

While women hold prominent leadership roles in many industries in the community, that has not carried over to the political sector.

Caroline Hallsworth, the city’s Executive Director of Administrative Services says during the 2014 Municipal Election 78 or over 90-percent of the candidates running for council were men compared to just eight women.

Four of those women were elected.

The next municipal election is 2018 which is also the 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote.
