We need at least one more week of cold temperatures before the Sudbury Trail Plan Association can open the majority of its snowmobile trails.

STP President Church Breathat says the only trails open right now are ones that follow logging roads or rail beds.

He says there is a lack of snow, that means rocks and logs are still jutting out from the ground and create dangerous conditions for sledders.

Breathat says swamps aren’t yet frozen over and anyone venturing out is getting snow machines stuck.

Plus, ice on area waterways is especially not thick enough to hold snowmobiles.

Breathat understands snowmobilers are anxious to get out, but he says trails need at least one more week of cold temperatures and a bit more snow before they can officially open.

He says snowmobile trails normally open around the second week of January so the STP is only behind be one week.
