An alleged impaired driver left a wake of destruction yesterday before he was finally arrested by police.

Around 11:15am, a pick-up truck failed to stop for a red light on Elm Street at Regent, struck another vehicle causing extensive damage.

The suspect then fled the scene.

The vehicle continued on, striking a fence and a road sign, then the suspect tried to drive through a pedestrian tunnel at Dufferin and Frood Road.

Again the suspect fled the scene.

Thanks to calls from concerned citizens, the suspect and vehicle were found on Lasalle Boulevard at Barrydowne a short time later.

Breath samples from the 67-year old Azilda driver were found to be twice over the legal limit of alcohol.

He is charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle While Impaired By Alcohol, Dangerous Driving and Failing to Remain at the Scene of a Collision.

The suspect will appear before court April 1st.
